Auto Accident Injuries

Injuries sustained in any type of motor vehicle accident can be so slight that at first you don't even know you are injured, or extremely severe with obvious injuries.  Injuries like cuts or broken bones are easily identified and people seek treatment.  Other injuries may not be visible.  Pain and other symptoms may not develop for days or weeks, yet without proper treatment they can continue for years.  In fact, it can take months to feel the full effects of these type of injuries.

Whiplash

Injuries to the neck caused by the sudden movement of the head, backward, forward or sideways is commonly referred to as "Whiplash".  Whiplash is most commonly received from riding in car or truck that is struck from behind or that collides with another object.  When the head is suddenly jerked back and forth beyond its normal limits, the muscles and ligaments supporting the spine and head can be overstretched or torn.  The soft pulpy discs between the spinal bones can bulge, tear or rupture.  Vertebrae can be forced out of their normal position, reducing range of motion.  The spinal cord and nerve roots in the neck can get stretched and irritated.  While the occupants can suffer considerable soft tissue injury, the car may be only slightly damaged.  The resulting instability of the spine and soft tissues can result in headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, pain in the shoulder, arms and hands, reduce the ability to turn and bend, and even low back problems.

Other Common Injuries

Whiplash is the most well known injury suffered in motor vehicle accidents.  There are many other areas that can be injured.  The hand, wrist and elbow may be injured from the steering wheel.  The collarbone, ribs, low back and hip may be injured from the seatbelt.  The foot, ankle and knee may be injured from bracing or pressing on the brake.  In many cases people are unaware that their problem was caused by the accident.

Treatment

After a thorough case history and examination the doctor will prescribe a treatment plan to alleviate pain and restore proper function to the injured areas.  Left uncorrected auto injuries can still cause symptoms and dysfunction for five years or more, and in the long run cause secondary problems such as arthritis.

Treatment typically includes specific chiropractic spinal adjustments to restore range of motion and spinal function.  Muscle stimulation, ice, heat and ultrasound will be utilized to reduce pain, inflammation and promoted healing.  Deep tissue massage will break up scar tissue and restore flexibility to the damaged muscles and ligaments.  And, finally, stretching and strengthening exercises will be done to loosen tight muscles and strengthen weaker muscles.

Restaino Chiropractic has an outstanding success rate when treating auto injuries.  A study by the Quebec Automobile Insurance Society reviewed 10,382 articles on the care of whiplash injuries and they recommended spinal manipulation (also called chiropractic adjustments) as effective care for whiplash injury while rejecting numerous other treatments.

One of the keys in treating auto injuries is proper and timely diagnosis of the problem.  If caught early enough inflammation can be reduced and scar tissue minimized.  If you have been in an accident please call our office at 578-8778 to make an appointment.  The longer you wait the longer it will take to recover.

Insurance

Most auto insurance policies contain Personal Injury Protection, which means that your bills will be paid at 100% up to a certain limit.  If you are not at fault in the accident your insurance company will seek reimbursement from the other drivers insurance company.   Restaino Chiropractic will help with paperwork, file all insurance claims and answer any questions.
